Appraisals

Why Quilt appraisals?

They are needed for:

  • Insurance coverage - to determine a value in order to protect old and new quilts in case of fire, damage, or theft. This includes shipping a quilt or entering a contest. Most insurance adjusters have little or no knowledge of the value of quilts and will rely on an appraisal by a certified appraiser.
  • Donation -to determine the fair market value for which a tax deduction may be taken. The appraisal must be done within 60 days of the date of donation.
  • Selling a quilt - to determine the fair market value based on sales of comparable quilts.

Value considerations include:

  • condition
  • workmanship
  • visual impact
  • record of sales (if applicable)
  • provenance (history of the quilt, especially antique quilts)
