Appraisals
Why Quilt appraisals?
They are needed for:
- Insurance coverage - to determine a value in order to protect old and new quilts in case of fire, damage, or theft. This includes shipping a quilt or entering a contest. Most insurance adjusters have little or no knowledge of the value of quilts and will rely on an appraisal by a certified appraiser.
- Donation -to determine the fair market value for which a tax deduction may be taken. The appraisal must be done within 60 days of the date of donation.
- Selling a quilt - to determine the fair market value based on sales of comparable quilts.
Value considerations include:
- condition
- workmanship
- visual impact
- record of sales (if applicable)
- provenance (history of the quilt, especially antique quilts)
